In this article, I invite you to take a look at psychic abilities, and more specifically at mediumship, an endless subject for reflection, questions, research… Am I a medium? If you’re reading this article, mediumship appeals to you and you want to learn more about it. You’ve knocked on the right door.
Do you sometimes have strange sensations or impressions? Do you feel a presence when you’re alone in a room? Perhaps you are receptive to messages from the invisible world, the world beyond? You probably have a gift, the gift of sensing spirits, a gift of clairvoyance. You don’t necessarily want to predict the future, but first of all to understand these strange sensations. And why not use them wisely? Being psychic lets you feel things that others can’t feel: it means having extrasensory perception. No doubt you have the gift of divination. Here are the signs that will help you confirm that your sixth sense is active.
Please note, however, that I’m sharing my own experience, built over several decades of learning, and that this is not rehashed content you might find on any website that talks about a subject without having practiced or known it. So I offer you this article based on my reading, my learning and my views. If what I tell you seems completely crazy, set it aside. I’m not forcing anyone to share my beliefs. On the contrary, I invite you to experiment! That’s the only way you’ll gain real knowledge.
How do you define mediumship? This ability to sense things?
A medium is a “channel” between two worlds: the physical world (ours, the one we act in every day) and the spiritual world (where souls and entities reside, what is invisible to the naked eye).
A medium is able to sense places and people, to make contact with a spirit, to tell the future beyond their 5 physical senses. Remember that the 5 senses are hearing, smell, sight, taste and touch. You can interpret this either as a kind of extension of one of the 5 senses (or a combination of them, like mediums who see (sight) and hear (hearing) spirits), or as a kind of sixth sense, also called “intuition”.
The medium feels, sees and hears the world that is invisible to the naked eye of ordinary mortals. Some then speak of a “gift”. Personally, I prefer the term “ability”. The term “gift” has too religious a connotation, which also leaves out some mortals. Whereas the term “ability” means that mediumship is accessible to everyone, given time and practice.
What does the medium have access to in this famous invisible world?
Before finding out whether you have the ability to communicate with or perceive the dead, I invite you to clearly distinguish entities from ghosts. We need to agree on the vocabulary we use.
Disembodied entities are souls that have already lived a life. They have no physical body (unless they decide to appear to you in a physical form you might recognize: your grandfather, your aunt, your nephew…). As such, disembodied entities are a kind of light, a somewhat vaporous essence. Among these disembodied entities, there are those that are at peace and continue on their path to reach perfection and attain the same rank as the Saints, the Archangels… On the other side, there are disembodied entities that haven’t found the light and are, by nature, unhappy. I would tend to say, from my experience, my path and my beliefs, that most of these unhappy entities are not unhappy because they are fundamentally evil.
Granted, some are indeed inhabited by the Devil, while others are unhappy because they have been forgotten, because they are still attached to their former life and keep haunting places, for example. That’s how I’d sum up the poltergeist phenomenon (which deserves a closer look). As a rule, it’s very unlikely that an ordinary person will manage to get rid of a poltergeist on their own… You need a professional, sometimes even an exorcist, a soul guide and/or a medium. The medium and the soul guide can open a dialogue with the poltergeist or poltergeists and so guide them step by step toward the light. Sometimes it takes several attempts before the spirit accepts its new condition and stops haunting the place. It doesn’t happen overnight.
As you’ll have gathered, a disembodied spirit can communicate with a medium in different ways.
A ghost, however, is merely the resurgence of a past event. The idea is that walls hold a memory, hence the saying “the walls have ears”. They pick up and record scenes from the past and can replay them for a moment to a medium or a “sensitive” person. In that case, the ghost can’t do anything to you. There is no communication to be had, since it’s just the replay of a past scene. That said, the scene replayed in this way may have an impact, a meaning, for the person who witnesses it.
You’ve probably already asked yourself the question after an experience: a premonitory dream, an intuition, sensing a place through its energies, feeling drained after meeting people who take all your energy… In short, there are 1,001 doorways into mediumship.
There isn’t just one kind of mediumship. There are many. We are all different beings, and as such, it’s impossible to define ONE single type of mediumship. However, mediums very often have things in common.
Childhood certainly matters in psychoanalysis and in the study of the mind in the broad sense, but it is also a common thread among all mediums.
As children, we are said to be not yet shaped by parental censorship and conventional thinking. As such, children are sensitive and feel things with complete innocence. They may then say they see someone who has passed away. Hearing that your child talks to the dead is therefore entirely possible. Their telling you about their past, in a previous life, is also very plausible.
Often, parents, at a loss when faced with such talk, tell their children to stop “talking nonsense”. The child, seeing that their parents give no credit to what they say, gradually closes up and ends up feeling nothing anymore. If the child enjoys a family environment that encourages them to open up and express what they see and what they may feel, then inevitably they will more easily keep this intuition, or their mediumistic abilities, awake, and these will serve them all their life.
But child mediums who are not necessarily guided by caring people around them end up taking refuge in their own world, cutting themselves off more or less from their playmates. They get labeled as dreamy, shy, emotional, often “head in the clouds”, and of course this doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them. Think of the boy in The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis.
A medium who doesn’t know it yet may feel intense fatigue around certain “energy-draining” people. You may have noticed, for example, that after being around a certain person you felt completely exhausted. It’s possible. It may be a case of energy vampirism.
But very often, mediums feel things through their body, a kind of intuition that lets them experience what the person in front of them is going through. They are like sponges, picking up energies that aren’t theirs. Charged places are especially conducive to this empathy: historic sites, haunted houses, public transportation. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to sit down right across from the medium, and without even opening their mouth, the medium can tell everything they feel: sorrow, joy, a pregnancy, a death to come…
Very often, this empathy, uncontrolled and unmastered, is a source of distress for the unaware medium. To help with this, some stones are traditionally used to keep this empathy in check as much as possible and to channel it better. In that case, labradorite is associated with absorbing the surrounding energy and with protection, and sodalite with structuring your thoughts and steadying your emotions.
If you are a medium, or a medium who doesn’t know it yet, you have probably already had one or more paranormal experiences.
These can be recurring premonitory dreams, or conscious or unconscious out-of-body experiences (also called astral projections). What is an out-of-body experience or astral projection? It’s a phenomenon that can be conscious or unconscious.
Children can do it quite easily. As we grow up, we lose this ability if it isn’t kept up. As a child, when class bored you, you could let your imagination run free. Then, little by little, as this state of relaxation deepens, the child feels gravity less and lets go. Without realizing it, they transfer their “consciousness” into their astral body and lose track of what’s being said in class. They then dream themselves into parallel universes, into the cosmos, beside a loved one (living or departed). Sometimes a noise, a sound, the teacher’s voice calls them back to order, and they abruptly reconnect with the physical world.
Astral projection can happen in adulthood, even without any mediumistic or esoteric ability. It then happens unconsciously for any beginner. You may already have dreamed of flying through space, of being somewhere you float, where harmony and peace reign. When you wake up, you keep a conscious sensation, which fades as the day goes on. That feeling of being completely light, airy, almost still floating, completely free of the laws of gravity.
You have probably also had the experience of miraculously escaping an accident, an assault, or a potentially traumatic event.
Some people say, for example, that against all odds they changed something in their routine: taking a different route, leaving later, ending up staying with someone when nothing suggested a last-minute change of plan. By changing just one tiny thing, they later learned that they had made the right decision by putting off their trip. Some will say it wasn’t their destiny, others will say a miracle happened. These miracles don’t happen by chance. They all have a meaning to decode.
Think of those who fell ill, or whose alarm clock didn’t go off right away, and who, for example, didn’t go to the World Trade Center as usual on September 11, or those who missed a plane that was going to crash, or those who escaped assaults…
Unaware mediums, or mediums in childhood, have always listened to a kind of little inner voice. Some call it “intuition”, others the “voice of the Guardian Angel” or the “sixth sense”. But the nature of this intuition remains the same. These people are then advised and guided in their choices and decisions, and they make a point of following this little voice, trusting it completely.
Very often, they realize that this intuition is always right. Even when they think they should go but their little voice whispers to wait, and they comply, sometimes chafing with frustration, they always realize it was for their own good. Experience therefore teaches them that they can rely completely on this intuition, which is somehow “above” them and has command of more factors than they do.
Without being able to explain it concretely, after opening up to paranormal experiences, or trying to explain a keen interest in a culture or a historical period, these people sought answers to their questions. They then found some answers in esotericism. Once they pushed open the door to this universe, esotericism became a way to explore their abilities further. A new adventure then begins for them. Very often, when you begin an esoteric quest, you never completely finish it. You can always turn away from it, but no matter what, esotericism always catches up with you.
Much in the same vein as empathy, another ability stands out: sensing. This isn’t the same kind of sensing as the empathy we saw earlier. Here, it’s about opening your channels and, without knowing it, picking up the spirits around you. Some unaware mediums will then, with no rational explanation, find a room becoming noticeably colder in a very short time, hear the sound of breaking dishes, for example, hear whispers, get goosebumps… It’s quite unsettling the first few times. But you may also feel that you’re being watched, sometimes even spied on, monitored, feel something massive behind your back. It can’t be explained.
You may feel either very uncomfortable or, on the contrary, a wave of immense love. These indicators are signals for detecting the nature of the spirit that is near you and wants to pass on a clear message.
Sometimes even pets (dogs and cats) may start staring at a spot, barking or meowing, or even running around the house when there is no visible danger…
All these indicators should be taken into account, and they show that a spirit is indeed present. This unsettling experience often happens to mediums who are gradually starting to open up, or whose potential is being discovered. Entities don’t appear by chance to just anyone, at just any time.
To be part of the “clan” of mediums, of people who have an ability, a gift of clairvoyance, it isn’t about checking exactly whether all these signs are present in you, latent or manifest.
It’s simply about questioning yourself about your life path and seeing whether you have indeed come across one or more of the signs mentioned above. None of this is meant to be a diagnosis: it’s only meant to tell you that many people have had these experiences too. You are not alone.
If you want to develop this interest in esotericism, you are in the right place. Avoid staying alone. Because when you stay alone, it’s much easier to “make up stories in your head”, lose touch with reality, and lack perspective in your judgment. Sharing is an essential experience for any apprentice medium.
Welcome to you if you are discovering this potential in yourself. To those who are already well along in this quest, I wish a wonderful adventure filled with beautiful discoveries. But, once again, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Patience, experience and sharing will help you grow and push the boundaries of your inner quest even further, toward becoming a better version of yourself!
A question, an experience, another way of seeing things… The discovery continues in the conversation.
