The Kinthia collection
Turning a piece of apatite jewelry between your fingers while you hunt for an idea is a little ritual you pick up fast, and never quite drop. Its blue, sometimes vivid, sometimes greenish, recalls a shallow sea over a sandy bottom. It’s associated with inspiration and creative impulses, with ideas that are slow to take shape.
The Kinthia notebook
A few pointers to find what feels like you.
Apatite isn’t a quartz but a phosphate, a family of minerals that comes in blue, green, yellow, or nearly colorless. The kind found in jewelry is most often blue, a vivid tone that turns green depending on the light. Fairly soft, it scratches more easily than quartz and needs a little care.
Its domain is ideas taking shape: following an urge, exploring it, then giving it a form all your own. A project getting off the ground, a notebook you open, an art practice you return to after years: so many occasions to wear it. It won’t write anything for you, but it keeps you company while you search.
It comes in two main forms: polished points, which you set near the place where you work, and faceted beads in necklaces where it mingles with other blue or green stones, such as amazonite.
It’s a lovely gift for a writer, an illustrator, a musician, or a teacher. Since it’s fairly fragile, it’s best worn as a necklace rather than a ring, and stored apart, away from harder stones. Its blue goes with cool tones as well as with white.
