There’s a mistaken belief that only people with a gift can use a pendulum. Yet some people interested in esotericism, dowsing and divination don’t dare take the plunge, thinking they could never do it. That’s not true. You don’t necessarily need a gift to use a pendulum: we are all capable of understanding the energies around us and finding meaning in them.
That said, to know how to use a pendulum, you do need to meet a few essential “prerequisites” for using this dowsing tool properly. As we’ve explained in other articles, you need a sound inner framework for this practice, namely:
Understanding that the pendulum can awaken abilities that lie buried and dormant within you.
So let’s look at these essential factors together.
To use the pendulum, you absolutely need to know how to let go. It isn’t up to the person who has become the working tool to answer the questions asked by the client, but to use their own pendulum to answer them. The psychic doesn’t need to listen to their own thoughts, but only to focus on what their pendulum will answer.
When an apprentice medium or apprentice psychic starts out, this is very often one of the first obstacles they meet on their quest. Yet this difficulty letting go will turn out to be a valuable tool for starting to practice on a sound footing. A weakness can become a strength.
So if you are someone who gets too emotionally involved for others, who can’t set aside their own emotions, who doesn’t know how to step back enough, or who wants too much on others’ behalf, the pendulum isn’t for you. If you recognize yourself in this portrait, you’d do better to turn to other kinds of divination tools such as Oracles or Tarot, which may suit you better.
When you use the pendulum, you have to be ready for an answer you won’t necessarily like, or one you weren’t expecting. You need to be completely free of judgment. Both toward the question the client asks and toward the outcome, whether you’d like to give your client a positive answer or have to announce a failure. It’s hard, indeed, to tell a client that her plan to have a baby won’t happen this month, or that someone will fail an exam. Nobody wants that, and yet these things happen. So you need to be ready to deliver this kind of answer.
You will then need to set aside your own emotions and thoughts in favor of what the pendulum says. It’s hard to block them out, but it’s necessary. This mental discipline is exactly what you’ll be asked for when you meditate.
That’s how the psychics on our psychic reading platform have managed to master the divination pendulum. By consulting one of our experts, you can watch them use the pendulum during a webcam psychic reading. Some also teach pendulum practice. So they can help you improve.
So in the end, you’ll gradually learn to silence the inner noise so you can focus on your surroundings and on the energies you are immersed in.
It can’t be said enough… But to refine your results and make progress, there’s only one lever: practice.
As my teacher used to say, you can read a whole stack of books about windsurfing and learn a lot, but if you never get on your board, all that knowledge will be useless. You have to dare to face what may frighten you at first… So it’s only by putting your feet on the board that you’ll learn.
So you can take refuge for a while in book learning. It can give you a few reference points, but at some point it won’t be enough. So it’s up to you to take the plunge and experiment.
Keep in mind that your first results may be hesitant. But don’t get discouraged. Keep going and you’ll see for yourself that your results will gradually become sharper. You’ll also gradually improve your relationship with your pendulum.
So if you want immediate results, pendulum practice isn’t recommended for you.
The more you practice, the more technique, precision and understanding you’ll build up, and above all, you’ll learn to listen to yourself better. It’s essential. Very often, at the start, people say you learn by trial and error, and that’s perfectly true. There’s nothing you can rely on to say you’re 100% right. But little by little, your level of certainty will grow.
To that end, you’ll understand that the more you use your pendulum, the better you’ll understand:
Alongside your dowsing practice, I strongly encourage you to work on your mind. The more you are able to clear your mind, the faster you’ll open yourself to the spiritual and esoteric world. Your perceptions will gradually improve and you’ll feel almost guided, called. So there’s no miracle here. For that: meditate…
Admittedly, using a divination pendulum means coming into contact with dowsing and, above all, with the whole esoteric universe.
Who is free of fears? What may cause a block will mostly be your imagination. You may have absorbed many preconceived ideas and false mental patterns that you’ll need to take the time to unlearn.
If you’re able to work on unlearning your fears by getting to the roots of what created them, you’ll be able to use a pendulum and even go further in your esoteric practice. If, on the other hand, your fears are stronger than you (for now or for good), then don’t waste your time and don’t even try the pendulum. You’d quickly be confronted with fears that could paralyze you. This failure could then crush your desire to go further. It would be a real shame to kill the plant just as it sprouts!
Nobody will ask you to start automatic writing right away.
Fears are often fed by cultural and/or collective imagination. You may have grown up on horror movies that gave you a fear of the invisible world. Especially scary movies like The Exorcist or the Annabelle doll.
Rest assured, you won’t end up facing what’s most frightening: no ghosts, no terrifying demons, your partner won’t be possessed by an uncontrollable evil force, and you won’t need to call an exorcist priest. All of this is mostly associated with the Ouija board, and there, yes, you need to be extremely careful. Nobody can use it without taking a risk…
Using a pendulum while carefully following our advice won’t turn your life into a horror movie, and it won’t open Pandora’s box with all the fears attached to it.
However, this condition 3 only applies as long as you don’t try to use the pendulum to communicate with spirits, or as a stand-in for a missing Ouija board, or to impress the crowd at a séance. Don’t use the pendulum in those cases. I strongly advise against it. Because then, yes, you’ll be exposing yourself to risks. Many people have come out of such experiences deeply shaken.
Be careful: thinking that your guardian angels will be a force to counter any evil spells is an illusion… No, you can’t have a bodyguard 100% of the time. All it takes is a gap, however tiny, for problems to appear.
In short, if you jump every time a door slams, or if you fear uncontrollable mediumistic communication, then don’t go any further. You first need to work on your fears. One thing at a time. There’s no rush. It’s better to set out on this spiritual and esoteric quest feeling sure of yourself, knowing that you’ll have wonderful encounters but also hit some thorny moments. It won’t all be Care Bears along the way. If you’re ready for that, and you approach it with humility, then go for it. The adventure will be all the better for it.
This question comes up again and again on my psychic forum, and I can tell you without a doubt: the answer is no. You really need to unlearn this way of thinking to get back to the plain truth.
Yes, you do need to be open-minded, show discernment, use common sense and, above all, persevere.
No, it isn’t a gift passed down from Aunt Mildred, a dowser who practiced with the divination pendulum, so that you’d have it in your blood too. You’ll simply benefit from the work Aunt Mildred built up during her lifetime, which gives you a comfortable foundation to develop, grow and learn even more.
We are all born with a more or less developed esoteric background. Some cultivate it and work on it, while others refuse it for reasons of their own.
But yes, the fact that your ancestors were already immersed in esotericism is a significant advantage…
I encourage you to keep going with your practice, and above all, you’ll learn to build your self-confidence. And for those who lack it, the pendulum is an undeniable tool to help… So now, it’s your turn!
A question, an experience, another way of seeing things… The discovery continues in the conversation.
